Save The Silver Lining!

category: media,projects | 03/16/2010 | c3mments

Everyone who knows me knows how I feel about The Man. And most agree… The Man needs to be taken down a peg or five. Well guys, looks like The Man is at it again.
(this will probably only effect you if you’re an adventure gamer, but read on anyway if you love me. lol)

So, for the past 8 years I’ve been following an online group called Phoenix Online. These people are fans of an old adventure game series long abandoned by the powers that be called Kings Quest. The game ended with an unsatisfactory cliffhanger and a mediocre excuse for a game called Mask of Eternity. Mediocre? Well, let’s just say they took it in an entirely different direction, with an entirely different character, entirely different looks… and they added a crappy battle system. It was horrible.

Phoenix Online decided then to make their own ending after it was more than apparent that the series had been long abandoned in favor of “more popular” things. Kings Quest 9 began production and was 4 or 5 years into development when it was shut down by Vivendi Universal… the new owners of Sierra works.

As you can imagine, the folks involved (and the fans of the project) were horrified. But did they lie down and take it? Um, NO!

A movement called “Save KQIX” began, and spanned over several months. Petitions were flooded, mass emails were sent, letters were snail-mailed, groups protested. It was beautiful. And while most people believe that these groups never accomplish anything, we did. In fact, a few months into the campaign, Vivendi graciously decided to grant Phoenix Online a fan license to complete their project under a new name: The Silver Lining. Pretty cool huh? Well, that’s just part I of the drama so don’t be too pleased yet.

A short while back, Activision became the new owner of the copyright label… and guess what. >.< Yup, you guessed it! They revoked the license. And the even harsher thing? They not only requested production be halted, they’ve ordered that everything (including the forums for the website) be torn down! Like they want it to seem like the project never existed or something!

Anyway, as you can imagine, the community and myself are all pretty upset about the whole thing. But hey, campaigning worked before, so why not try again, right That’s where this post comes in.

I have a few websites here that I wanted to post for your consideration. If you’re a Kings Quest fan who already knows about this fan project, a gamer in general, or simply a person who is fed up with corporate greedy bastards bullying everyone around them, please consider taking a few minutes of your time to put your names down for these. I’d appreciate it, and Phoenix Online will definitely appreciate it:

http://savetsl.co.cc – This is the website for the main campaign. You’ll find everything you need to know about this campaign here, so this should be your first stop if you wanna help. There’s a form letter already written and ready to send. The more emails this company gets, the better. All you have to do is click a button.

http://tsl-game.com – This is the main page for the project… as you can see, it’s already been stripped down to the bare essentials to keep the community in touch with each other. Join the community if you wanna talk to the members of the campaign directly! They’re cool people and they don’t bite. :)

Let’s show Activision who’s boss. This project was not harming them. In fact, this entire act shows me just how low a company will go for an extra dollar. This infuriates me to no end. I have half a mind to mail them a handful of my fan art and fan-fiction I created based on Kings Quest back when I was 14 and ask them if that warrants a C&D letter. Heh…

Happy Mood!

category: life,media | 03/06/2010 | c4mments

Aloha! Yes, I’ve decided to adopt some Hawaiian into my dialogue. Everything Hawaiian is so fun to say, so why not?

Believe it or not, I’m actually in an amazing mood: which is so strange considering how this year has gone so far. Here are just a few of my “misadventures” this year:

  1. My very first traffic ticket… ever.
  2. Oral surgeon operation… and strange aftermath involving yet another extraction.
  3. A pulled tendon/ligament on my right foot due to a horrible toe-stubbing incident (this happened last night)
  4. Dare-to-Live being hacked… again.
  5. More snow storms and power outages than I can count
  6. The online newspaper falling through because of… complications
  7. Losing my purse and getting the crap scared out of me for like, an hour
  8. Bad bad fights that I don’t want to get into more detail with

Yikes… and the sad thing is, this is only part of what this year has been like for me so far. So you would think I’d be pretty upset? Truth is, I have been… but then when I looked at the list in a different way, it didn’t seem quite so bad. Let me give you an example:

  1. The traffic cop gave me a break and was very nice, so the ticket could have been worse. Also, had he not stopped me, I could have probably gotten into an accident.
  2. The operation went great, it didn’t hurt like I thought it would. See previous entry for details. It’s really just the time it took to get it all done that’s annoying me.
  3. I could have had a broken toe, it’s a miracle I didn’t, to be honest.
  4. The hacker didn’t have time to screw up my site before I tore all of his work down.
  5. The snow made for some amazing pictures for the paper.
  6. The online newspaper would have taken forever anyway… which would have taken away from this site… and possibly my grades.
  7. I FOUND the purse because someone honest turned it in at the library.
  8. I have friends and a boyfriend who love me no matter how stupid I act.

So see, no matter how bad things get, there’s almost always something positive to look for, usually in the turn-out. So in a way, I’ve actually been lucky this year. Anyway, I’m trying to look at life more like list #2 than list #1. It will be pretty difficult, as I’ve always had a pessimistic nature, but I think I can pull it off. If I’ve learned anything at college, it’s that I can pull off anything if it’s important enough for me to keep trying at. And this is definitely important… for my sanity and the sanity of those who have to live with me.

Soo I saw Wonderland last night!!!!!!!!!!!

I know you were expecting a positive review about this from me, because of my Depp obsession, but surprisingly I was also impressed with the actress they chose for Alice. The fact that she’s an unknown intrigued me, but I expected her to be dry and awkward in her acting ability (think Kristen Stewart circa Twilight film 1) but she actually managed to pull off a strong personality in her role. Alice had a lot more bite to her this go around. She wasn’t the prim little princess who burst into tears at the drop of a hat. She took charge with very little hesitation and showed Wonderland who was boss. And, of course, my favorite character was still the Mad Hatter. Alice may have saved the day, but the Hatter did the flutterwagen… and there’ s no topping that. And a flutterwagen is? Well… go see for yourself. :)

So, I’ve chosen to adopt a pretty kick-ass quote from the movie into my list of favorites: “I sometimes believe in at least six impossible things before breakfast.” What a nice idea! I definitely need to try that sometime. We all should. That’s my challenge for all of my affiliates (and whomever else wants to try it). Think of six things you believe are impossible to achieve in your life… then believe they can happen. And, of course, post them on your next blog so we can all cheer you on!

Anyway, after the movie Amy and I spent about an hour at the local Wal-Mart mixing and matching some pretty cool bracelets from the bins in the usually crappe jewelry section. They’ve improved that area a lot, and we wound up picking out the most insane bracelet combos imaginable. Here’s mine for example:

Haha, there are so many that I’ll probably just wind up wearing them all the time… much easier than trying to take them off. LOL!  Anyway, this made me realize just how much I miss shopping and “girls night out”, so I definitely need to plan some kind of trip to the city for spring break. That would be great.

So anyway, I need to start revamping some pages, so that’s all for now!

Doppelganger Week

category: media,memes | 02/02/2010 | c4mments

Heh, so I promised myself that I wouldn’t be a slave to trends, but FB is actually churning out some fun little theme posts these days! First bra colors, now this. I’m so glad I ditched Myspace. :P

Anyway, for those who are not familiar, people on Facebook are uploading images of celebrities who look like them. Perhaps you have been told over and over that you’re the spitting image of Angelina Jolie… or an online face matcher has has paired you up with Conan O’Brien three straight tries in a row. If you’ve found your doppelganger, now is the perfect time to show ‘em off!

Great face match application: http://myheritage.com

And for those of you who are curious, here’s mine. I’ve been compared to her a lot, especially since I dyed my hair black:

Yes. I saw it.

O_O I still can’t believe I’m about to say this… but I LOVED New Moon!

I have to say I’m a little relieved. When they replaced Catherine with Chris for director I thought there was a CHANCE at redeeming the series, but I didn’t think they could save the Twilight movies from the rampant destruction of K-stew. I’ll admit to being on board when they first cast her for the part, but quickly changed my mind when she opened her mouth in the first movie and began releasing endless strings of epileptic word vomit. It was quite sad.

This movie is no exception. She does butcher a few lines, especially the lines involving her missing Adonis, but Lautner more than made up for it with a surprisingly strong role. I was very impressed with him! Thank GOD they didn’t replace him with Copon. That would have been a disaster.

I loved Victoria’s scenes and I am so sad that she can’t be in the third film. The replacement is not an actress I’ve seen before, so I won’t release any anguished groans yet. I was really looking forward to Victoria in the next movie though, so I’m a little sad.

There’s an actual hint of fantasy in this one; the Volturi and the wolves were so nicely done, and the action scenes were top-notch (the cracks in Edward’s face during the Volturi fight scene were EXACTLY as I pictured a vampire fight while reading the books) and the chase scene only missed one critical element that I think would have perfected the moment (Within Temptation’s “Somewhere” playing in the background while Bella fights through the crowd) The entire movie is sprinkled with one-liner humor, which added some much-needed relief from the intensity of the storyline.

Overall, I think this was MUCH better than the epic fail that was the first movie. No offense to those who liked it, but Twilight is a movie about vampires, not a gothic version of Thirteen. Anyway, I think they’re getting into a nice rhythm with the movie adaptations. Well worth the ticket price and fight to get in through the door. (Twilighters are a rather violent bunch, aren’t they?)

While I am on the subject, I was going through my old photo manipulations on Myspace and found a Cullenized photo of myself as a child. I made it shortly after the tutorial and posted it on the old site, but I just realized that it was never transferred over. I made it to model after Edward and Bella’s daughter Renesmee:

Let me know what you think! Also, if anyone has actually tried the tutorial on themselves (here’s the tutorial if you haven’t seen it) I would love to see how your pictures turned out. If you’d like to show off, please post links to your photo in the comments section. Who knows, if I get enough maybe I’ll host a little contest… :D

Skye Sweetnam Kicks @$$!

category: media | 11/18/2009 | c3mments

I know how annoying it is when you have to wait for a youtube video to load on a blog (especially if you’re stuck on a slow connection like me) so I’ll just post a text link here: >>>>clicky<<<<

I used to listen to her music a lot (when Tangled up in Me came out, I used the song name as my AIM) but then I didn't hear anything more from her. I finally decided to look her up and found out that she had another cd out! If only I had a decent music store where I live... anyway it's totally going on my wishlist.

Anyone else on the Skye fantrain?

Day Off

category: life,media,projects,update | 11/06/2009 | c2mments

Today was a great day. I didn’t have to set my alarm… for like, the first time in WEEKS (I can’t even remember for sure) I didn’t have to go to work, I didn’t have any immediate schoolwork to finish, and I’m (for the most part) caught up with my reporting duties. I decided to use my time to my advantage, so as a result, you’re looking at a brand new layout!!!

Do you ever worry about losing your touch? Like, when you haven’t had a chance to code in a while… you wonder when you start working on it whether or not you’re gonna come up with anything good. Well, today I actually surprised myself. It usually takes me a couple of days to do something like this, but this layout only took a few hours of my afternoon. And now I can sit back, relax, post a blog and then watch a pre-taped episode of Vampire Diaries. Life is good. :)

Whew… a lot of changes have happened for me lately… changes I don’t feel comfortable talking about here. But I’ve walked away from a lot of recent happenings with a more cool outlook on my life. Everyone who knows me knows that I have a bad habit of overdramatizing a situation. Now, I’m not saying that I’m over that now (not by a longshot!) but I feel like I’m starting to calm down and not make such a huge deal out of every little thing that happens to me. I’m really glad about that too, because it’s one of the things I’ve always hated about myself.

Tomorrow I have a trip with my college’s outdoor club. It’s an all-day geocaching trip (yay!) and I plan on taking a lot of pictures. My flickr account is set up, as you may have guessed by clicking on my little picture links, but I’m about full with my free space, so I’ll have to upgrade before I can do more. But you’ll hopefully see some more stuff soon. I’m getting into the features of flickr, and can’t believe I relied on myspace for so long to manage my albums.

This is gonna be a good winter… I can feel it. ^_^
